Seniors

San Luis Obispo offers some of the most beautiful backdrops for Senior Portraits on the Central Coast. From coastal cliffs and golden beaches to charming downtown streets and iconic Cal Poly landmarks, there is no shortage of stunning locations.

Senior year is a milestone worth celebrating intentionally. These portraits are not just photos — they mark the transition from one season of life to the next.

My goal is simple: to create senior portraits in San Luis Obispo that feel natural, confident, and timeless.

Choosing the right location sets the tone for your entire session. Whether you envision coastal sunsets, wildflowers, or campus portraits, San Luis Obispo offers locations that reflect your personality.

How to Find Your Location

In San Luis Obispo, there are several locations that are popular for high school and college seniors. Some of these locations include California Polytechnic State University, Terrace Hill, Pismo, Morro Bay and Avila beach, and downtown SLO. So, how do you find the perfect location for you? First, try to figure out where you spend most of your time. When you look back on your college years, what will you remember? The downtown vibe, the beaches, the hiking trails, the sunsets at Terrace Hill. Second, ask your photographer for suggestions or check out their portfolio to get an idea of what other seniors have done.

Cal Poly Campus – A Perfect Backdrop for College Senior Photos

If you’re a Cal Poly senior, there’s no better place to mark this milestone than the campus where you’ve made so many memories.

From the iconic Cal Poly sign to the Business and Engineering buildings and the surrounding hills, campus offers countless beautiful backdrops for senior photos..

Some popular photo locations include Dexter Lawn, where you’ve spent countless afternoons lounging between classes, the Ag fields and vineyards, which showcase the school’s roots, and Poly Canyon, offering those classic SLO rolling hill views. And of course, if you want to show off your school spirit, a shot in front of the Mustang Statue or Spanos Stadium is a must.

Choosing a location that represents your time at Cal Poly makes your senior photos even more meaningful. Whether you want a formal look with classic campus landmarks or something more fun and casual, like tossing your cap in the air at the University Union, there’s no shortage of ways to make your senior session unique.

Whatever you choose, your senior photos should reflect your journey, your memories, and your Mustang pride!

Morro Bay – A Stunning Backdrop for High School and College Senior Photos

If you love the ocean breeze, rugged coastline, and iconic Morro Rock, then Morro Bay is the perfect spot for your senior portraits. Just a short drive from campus, this location offers a mix of beachy, coastal, and small-town charm, making it a great setting for both classic and adventurous grads.

Golden sunset light glows on the sand and water, while the harbor adds a coastal feel.

Walk the beach, pose with Morro Rock, or use the docks—Morro Bay offers versatile, scenic backdrops for senior photos.

For Cal Poly seniors who spent weekends exploring the coast, this location is the perfect way to tie your college years to the place you called home.

Madonna Inn Secret Garden

The Madonna Inn Secret Garden is a perfect location for college senior photos because of its lush greenery, whimsical charm, and vibrant floral backdrops. The secluded garden setting offers a mix of elegance and playfulness, making it ideal for capturing both classic and fun graduation portraits. Whether posing under the arched trellises, near the colorful flowers, or along the winding pathways, this location provides a unique and timeless atmosphere for celebrating your senior year in San Luis Obispo.

Terrace Hill

I recently photographed a Cal Poly graduate who wanted her senior photos to highlight the natural beauty of San Luis Obispo. She preferred open spaces and scenic landscapes over brick buildings or downtown settings. We began on campus with classic graduation portraits in front of the California Polytechnic State University sign, then moved to garden areas and nature-filled spots throughout campus. Afterward, we headed to Terrace Hill for sweeping views and golden light. With just a couple of thoughtfully chosen locations, we created a gallery full of variety and stunning, nature-inspired images.

For High School Seniors in San Luis Obispo

Senior year moves quickly. Between fall sports, college applications, and graduation planning, it’s important to schedule senior portraits early — especially if you need images for yearbook deadlines. Most high schools in San Luis Obispo County have submission deadlines in the fall, so booking your session during late summer or early fall ensures you have time for editing and selection.

Cap and gown photos are also a meaningful part of the experience. Some families choose to include them during the session, while others schedule a short add-on session in the spring when graduation feels closer. Both options create beautiful, timeless images that mark the accomplishment.

Senior portraits are often used for prom announcements, graduation announcements, and celebration invitations. Planning your session with this in mind allows for outfit changes and a variety of looks — from polished and classic to relaxed and coastal.

Parent involvement is a big part of high school senior sessions. Many moms attend the session, help choose outfits, and guide the overall vision. I make the process easy and thoughtfully guided so both seniors and parents feel confident every step of the way.

For Cal Poly & Cuesta College Seniors

College graduation portraits have a slightly different focus. These sessions celebrate independence, achievement, and the transition into a new season of life.

Grad announcements are often more modern and personalized. Many Cal Poly and Cuesta College seniors choose a mix of campus images and scenic San Luis Obispo backdrops for variety.

I also offer a professional headshot add-on for college seniors entering the workforce or applying to graduate school. This gives you polished, career-ready images alongside your celebratory portraits.

Campus permissions are important to consider, especially during peak graduation season. Certain Cal Poly locations may require advance planning or specific timing to avoid crowds. I guide you through this so the process feels seamless.

Graduation season timing is key. Spring (March through May) is the busiest time for college seniors in San Luis Obispo. Booking early ensures access to iconic campus spots and golden evening light before caps start flying.

Experience & Local Expertise

As a San Luis Obispo senior photographer, I’ve photographed seniors at Cal Poly, Avila Beach, Montana de Oro, Downtown SLO, and Paso Robles vineyards. I help seniors feel confident, relaxed, and natural in front of the camera while choosing locations that reflect their personality and style.

Each year, I photograph several senior sessions across San Luis Obispo County. This allows me to understand which locations shine during specific seasons.

Spring is beautiful for wildflowers and green hills, especially in Montana de Oro and hillside overlooks. Summer brings warm coastal light and soft sunsets at Avila Beach. Fall offers golden tones in Paso Robles vineyards and quiet, glowing evenings downtown. Winter can provide dramatic skies and fewer crowds for a more editorial feel.

Certain locations work best at certain times of year. Beaches photograph beautifully at sunset during late summer and early fall. Wildflower fields peak in early to mid-spring. Downtown SLO is ideal during weekdays to avoid foot traffic. Campus sessions are best scheduled around major university events and graduation weekends.

Local experience matters. Knowing when and where to shoot ensures your senior session feels intentional, effortless, and uniquely San Luis Obispo.
