If you’re planning a trip along California’s Central Coast, San Simeon is one of the most beautiful places to capture family memories.
As a San Simeon family photographer, I love photographing families in this quiet coastal town. The area offers dramatic ocean views, peaceful beaches, and a relaxed atmosphere. It feels far removed from crowded tourist destinations.
San Simeon may be a small coastal community in San Luis Obispo County, but it is famous for hosting two incredible landmarks: the historic Hearst Castle and the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery. Families visiting the area often come for these attractions, but they quickly discover that the rugged coastline also makes a breathtaking backdrop for family photos.

Why San Simeon Is a Beautiful Location for Family Photos
San Simeon is one of the most underrated photography locations along California’s Highway 1. While nearby towns can become busy with visitors, San Simeon offers a quieter coastal experience that works beautifully for family sessions.
The landscape here is stunning. You’ll find dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, wide sandy beaches, and golden coastal hills that glow beautifully during sunset.
Another reason families love this area is the variety of scenery within a short distance. In just a few minutes you can move between ocean cliffs, sandy beaches, and scenic highway viewpoints.
Families visiting San Simeon often combine their photo session with a day exploring Hearst Castle or stopping by the elephant seal viewing area at Piedras Blancas. Capturing photos during your trip allows you to document your time together in a meaningful and lasting way.
Best Photo Locations in San Simeon
There are several beautiful places around San Simeon that work wonderfully for family photography sessions.
Piedras Blancas Beach
Piedras Blancas is well known for its elephant seal rookery, where visitors can see large groups of seals resting along the shoreline. Just beyond the viewing areas, the surrounding coastline offers rugged cliffs, open beaches, and dramatic ocean views that photograph beautifully.
This location works especially well for families who want natural, windswept coastal scenery.
Coastal Highway 1 Scenic Pullouts
Highway 1 is one of the most iconic coastal drives in California, and several scenic pullouts near San Simeon offer incredible backdrops for photos.
These locations feature sweeping ocean views, rocky coastline, and golden hillsides that glow during sunset. The light here during golden hour is especially beautiful and creates a soft, warm atmosphere for family portraits.
San Simeon State Beach
San Simeon State Beach is another wonderful option for family sessions. The beach is wide and peaceful, making it perfect for families with young children who want space to explore and play.
Kids can walk along the sand, look for seashells, or run near the water while we capture natural, joyful moments.
What to Wear for a San Simeon Family Photo Session
Choosing the right outfits can make a big difference in how your photos feel and look.
For coastal family sessions in San Simeon, I recommend soft, neutral colors that complement the natural scenery. Shades like cream, beige, soft blues, muted greens, and warm earth tones photograph beautifully against the ocean and coastal cliffs.
Layers are also a great idea since the Central Coast can be breezy, especially near the water. Light sweaters, textured fabrics, and flowy dresses add movement and visual interest to your photos.
Avoid overly bright colors or busy patterns, which can distract from the natural beauty of the location and the connection between your family members.
Comfortable shoes are also important, since some photo spots may involve walking along sand or uneven ground.
When to Schedule Your San Simeon Family Photos
Timing is an important part of creating beautiful coastal photos.
The best time of day for a San Simeon family photography session is typically during golden hour, which is the hour before sunset. During this time, the light becomes soft and warm, creating a dreamy coastal glow that photographs beautifully.
The Central Coast is known for its marine layer, which can bring fog in the mornings or early evenings depending on the season. This can actually create a beautiful, soft atmosphere in photos, but sunset sessions tend to offer the most consistent lighting.
San Simeon is beautiful year-round, but spring, summer, and early fall tend to be the most popular seasons for family sessions.
A Real Family Session in San Simeon
One of my favorite family sessions took place along the beautiful coastline near San Simeon. The family was visiting the Central Coast during a road trip along Highway 1. They wanted to capture memories from their time exploring the area.
We started the session near the cliffs overlooking the ocean. The light was beginning to soften as the sun moved closer to the horizon. The kids loved exploring the beach and watching the waves roll in. During this time, we captured candid moments together.
As the sun began to set, the sky turned soft shades of gold and pink. It created a beautiful backdrop for their family portraits. Some of my favorite moments came from the in-between interactions — laughter, hugs, and quiet walks along the shoreline.
Sessions like this are always special because they capture more than just photos. They document a family’s experience of being together in a beautiful place.

Many families visiting San Simeon are traveling through the area while exploring California’s famous Highway 1.
Whether you’re visiting Hearst Castle, stopping to see the elephant seals, or spending a few days exploring the Central Coast, a family photo session can be a meaningful way to capture your trip.
Because San Simeon is a smaller coastal town, planning your session in advance helps ensure we can choose the best location and timing for your photos.
